How to Install Abraca Music Player in Ubuntu Linux?

Posted on 03:10 by Unknown
Longtime ago there was Xmms (which was obviously "inspired" by Winamp). Then came the Xmms2 which was basically a re-newed version of Xmms written in the never (at that time) GTK2+ toolkit, although I said "re-newed" but remember that it was written from scratch!.

Then there are few players (which are basically frond-ends) that use both those "engines". Gxmms2 is such as player frond-end and then there was Abraca. The reason I said "was" because it seems at the moment that the player GUI is no longer being developed (perhaps it has all the intended features after all).

Remember with Abraca ... if you have thousands of audio files... it won't make it that easy on you. The main GUI is divided into main three sections.

Left side - Lets you manage playlists, Middle - Lets you search and displays the results (filtering) and the Right side - that's the real playlist.

*. Since it's based on Xmms2, it should play any file supported by Xmms - mp3, mp4, vorbis, aac, alac, wma, mac, sid, mod, wav, flac, mpc, speex, wavpack,, etc.

*. Add individual files/folders or URLs.

*. Read MP3 Tags.

*. Cover-art support.

You can install Abraca in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (should also work on 10.04 and 10.10) by using the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get abraca
On the bright side it's pretty fast but this is certainly not the best one if you have to handle albums + I personally find it a bit confusing. In that case, if you're looking for a fast loading, minimalistic player then I highly recommend that you give a try at the awesome Beatbox instead.

How To Install Amarok in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal ?

Posted on 20:45 by Unknown
Amarok is one of those applications that you just can't forget once used. I first came around it few years ago (when I was playing around KDE/Qt) and loved it ever since. But then I switched to Gnome and to be honest these days I don't use it much. But when it comes to playing music files in an elegant looking GUI, Amarok is at the top ten without a doubt.

Although I actually can't remember if Amarok type GUIs (Banshee, Rhythmbox, etc) type music players (you know with the iTunes look-n-feel) for Gnome came afterwards, yet for me I think it was actually Amarok that "introduced" that type of look-n-feel.

Main features...

*. Amarok is actually a Qt4 written GUI which uses major multimedia frameworks such as Phonon and Gstreamer. So any audio file (I think it had a video enabling plug-in as well) that's supported by those frameworks, it can play them.

*. A fully featured Equalizer.

*. Very easy to use GUI... especially the KDE4 version, oh I love those colors.

*. Display album-art, change different views, search for files with ease, manage huge collections of audio albums, excellent playlist support.. it's all there.

*. Import files directly from USB or other storage devices (iPod touch, etc).

*. Although this came kinda late, but now you can even attach album arts directly into the audio file (tag-editing) too.

*. Expand its capabilities via Scripts.

*. Rip or listen to Audio CDs.

*. Web integration such as last.fm, Magnatune, Jamendo, etc.

These are just a very few to mention of this amazingly beautiful, powerful application. There are basically two ways that you can install Amarok in Ubuntu 11.04 (should work on 10.10 and 10.04). You can either use the below command.
sudo apt-get install amarok
But if you want to install the latest versions of Amarok (this will install the current latest version 2.4.1), then I recommend that you use the Kubuntu PPA for that. So, for that enter the below command instead then.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install amarok kubuntu-restricted-extras
If you have installed Ubuntu restricted codecs, then I don't think you'll need the "kubuntu-restricted-extras" package since you can set Amarok to use the Gstreamer back-end in Ubuntu, but use the whole command, just in case :).

Install gxmms2 in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal - A GTK Written Music Player

Posted on 00:16 by Unknown
In the past when Winamp used to dominate the audio players with its gorgeous GUI and features... few GNU/Linux enthusiasts created an audio player that has a very close look-n-feel to Winamp, which was called Xmms. It was a "hit" back in the day with GNU/Linux PC/Laptop users because it lets us manage/listen to your audio files with ease.

But then as the time went on, Xmms project got frozen and I think the reason could be due to the fact of a GUI that looks similar to Winamp, you know, it's not the "thing" the days anymore :). And also the original Xmms was written in the older version of the GNU/Toolkit called GTK and if you use Gnome 2 + and never versions, then not just Xmms, but anything that's written in that old GTK toolkit does not integrate well with the never "theme engine".

So as a result there are few other audio players that uses the Xmms as their engine but the GUI is written in never version of GTK toolkit which resulting in a better looking GUI. So, if you're one of those individuals who love Xmms but would like to have a bit never looking GUI written in GTK2+, then you "may" like the audio player called gxmms2.

gxmms2 is actually is not based on Xmms, in fact, it uses the Xmms2 as the engine, which is the new generation of the "old" Xmms player, built from the scratch.

From things like a playlist, search for files, manage Xmms2 media libraries, etc... gxmms2 is a "decent" player. If you use Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal or older versions then you can install it by entering the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get install gxmms2
But for those who's searching for a never look-n-feel, well, you may not like this that much :).

How to Install Decibel Audio Player in Ubuntu?

Posted on 04:49 by Unknown
Decibel is another audio player for Gnome desktop what is written in GTK+ toolkit. It has a pretty simple interface, loads fast (one of its main key "features") and comes with decent amount of features too. Even after loading it with a huge list of files/albums... still it uses impressively lower PC resources, so it's a pretty powerful multimedia application for your GNU/Linux Laptop/PC nonetheless.

But as I've said before, the "catch" with Decibel is it's ability to run lightly on your hardware. For instance, while other known applications such as Amarok, Banshee and Exaile uses about 73/51/64MB of RAM while using, Decibel on the other hand uses about 28MB!.

Here are the other benchmarks I found while browsing their website.

Main features...

*. It's based on the Gstreamer multimedia framework, so anything Gstreamer plays, it can play (MP3, Vorbis, Flac, WAV, WMA, etc).

*. A fully featured Equalizer of its own.

*. Last.fm integration.

*. Album art/cover display support.

*. Simple and intuitive interface.

If you use Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (should work in 10.10 and 10.04) then you can install Decibel by entering the below command in your Terminal.
sudo apt-get install decibel-audio-player

How To Install Music On Console (MOC) Player in Ubuntu?

Posted on 02:07 by Unknown
Although if you have a lot of (thousands) of audio libraries to "taken care of", then seriously, avoid this. But if you don't need a lot of features or would like to play some audio files in an Ubuntu Server (without a GUI) based purely on the console, etc then, MOC or Music on console music player for GNU/Linux is a pretty decent application.

MOC lets you browse and create a simple playlist using your favorites audios + it has a file manager of its own which is very similar to Midnight commander (if you've ever used it). It comes with several different color themes which you can choose from and can play a lot of popular audio formats such as mp3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Musepack, Speex, WAVE, AIFF, AU, etc as well.

When combined with keyboard shortcuts such as pressing "q" in your Keyboard will exit the player without having to close the entire console window... it can be quite easy to use, I think :).

Few other main features to mention...

*. Icecast, Shoutcast... streaming support.

*. A mixer of its own!.

Well, it ain't pretty, but, it's what it is :P...

*. OSS, JACK, and ALSA output.

*. Change audio levels.

*. Few color themes as mentioned before.

If you use Ubuntu 11.04 (10.10/10.04) and want to install Music on console player, then simply open your Terminal and enter the below command.
sudo apt-get install moc
The last update seems to have come around 2009... so it's like frozen at the moment. But, then again, there isn't much to "enhance" either. Anyhow, if you know a PPA, please let me know :). Have fun with it!.

DeaDBeeF - A Simple Music Player for GNU/Linux (Especially if you have an old Laptop :D)

Posted on 07:56 by Unknown
I'm a huge fan of applications that requires lesser amount of system resources to do its task, well who's doesn't like them, right ? :). In that sense DeadBeeF is a pretty "light-weight" music player that is written in pure C++ thus it has no Gnome/GTK+ or KDE/Qt bindings either. But it integrates with your desktop and I personally love its GUI as well.

It may be a simple app, but guys and gals, playing file types such as ...

*. mp3, ogg vorbis, flac, ape, wv, wav, m4a, mpc, cd audio ... + many more is a breeze for DeaDBeeF.

*. Manage large audio albums.

*. Fully playlist support.

Main Interface, cool or what! :)...

*. Play files directly from your Audio CD, DVD, etc.

*. last.fm integration.

*. 18 band fully featured equalizer.

*. Radio and podcast support.

*. Live streaming.

*. Edit meta-tags (such as Track number/Year/Artist, etc).

*. Assign keyboard shortcuts for ease controlling... are just a few to mention.

If you use Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 or 10.04 and can't wait to install DeadBeeF, then open your Terminal and enter the below command. Enjoy!.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexey-smirnov/deadbeef
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install deadbeef

How To Install Songbird in Ubuntu Linux?

Posted on 20:20 by Unknown
First of all, I have a bit negative mindset towards Songbird mainly because sometime ago they decided to drop support for GNU/Linux!. But thanks to the PPA invention by Canonical, you can still get it installed in Ubuntu Linux nonetheless (if you miss it so much ;-) ).

Starting with excellent GUI (gotta say the truth even if I hate it)... very user friendly and comes with a lot of useful features as well.

*. Playlist-album management.

*. Equalizer.

*. Fully customizable options window and plays all the audio codes without any hassle at all.

If you use Ubuntu then you can easily install Songbird by using the below command.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:songbird-daily/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install songbird

Foobar2000, Another Excellent Audio Player for Microsoft Windows Platform!

Posted on 20:04 by Unknown
Not everyone one uses GNU/Linux... and I thought to be fair ;) I should write one or two good music players for Microsoft Windows as well. First of all, GNU/Linux does not make it any easier for anyone to play proprietary codes by default, but that's not to say Windows does not. For instance, the default so called "media player" in Windows OS can actually play very restricted amounts of codes only (unless you install codes like in GNU/Linux).

But the only difference in MS Windows platform, since it's been used by millions and all that + they care a bit less about philosophies that GNU/Linux is based on, etc you can easily Google and find hundreds if not thousands of multimedia players within seconds.

But not all those player as worth talking about either. Anyway, if you want an excellent, dedicated audio player (no videos) that comes with all the advanced features that any other audio player comes with nowadays such as...

*. Album/playlist support.

*. Fully featured Equalizer.

*. Few visualizations.

*. Easily change between "views" (make it look like Winamp GUI, etc).

Powerful preference settings window...
*. Gain audio.

*. Supports all the audio codecs by default.

*. Edit tags of your audio files.

*. Audio CD ripping within the player.

*. Addon/Component support by using which you can easily "add" new features such as Audio CD writer, Lyrics grabber, etc.

If you want to give it a try, then please get it from this foobar2000 download page. Get additional components from this page. Enjoy!.
