How to Install Grism (stock market analysis app) in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal?

Grism is a very simple yet an effective stock market analysis software for GNU/Linux. Not just GNU/Linux actually, it's a cross-platform opensource stock market software that can be used in MS Windows and Mac OSX as well.

It uses the Yahoo finance source thus once installed, you're good to go (no need for manual setups, etc). From showing advanced charts to importing the data to the HDD for future access, etc... it's a very handy utility to have which can easily simplify your stock trading activities under GNU/Linux.

You can install Grism in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (should work in 10.10/10.04 or any version after the 7.10!) by using the below method.

In recent versions such as 10.04 and beyond just download the .deb package from here and then simply double click on it. It should open-up the Ubuntu Software Center. Just follow the on-screen installations which is the most easiest method.

In much older Ubuntu versions (where USC is not present) you'll have to install the dependencies first by using the below commands in your Terminal window.

sudo apt-get install ruby libglade2-ruby libcairo2 libgtk2-ruby

Then get the .deb file from the above link and save it to your Home folder and use the below command.

sudo dpkg -i grism_0.9.0-1_all.deb

The bold text should be replaced with the latest version. Yep, after that it should be installed and ready to give you all sorts of stock market related information in your Ubuntu OS. Enjoy!.

Stock market is one of the most prominent things that plays a major ro..., you know what!, let me come straight. To be honest, I don't have the faintest idea of what the stock market and its "major" role to play on our lives (well I do.. but I think you know what I meant :)). But since I know a bit about GNU/Linux and computers... let me tell you few things about JStock from a more "technology" point of view.

JStock is an elegant little utility that once installed gives you updated (live) information about current stock market. It fetch these data from 25 different stock markets all around the world such as Australia, Hong Kong, India, Italy, etc. For the sake of integrity/quality, the public data is gathered from Yahoo finance.

Not just one, but you can set multiple watch lists with it as well. You can easily create a database of your transactions (including small notes, etc) and lets you calculate your net growth + buy and sell records too. Since you can't just stare at your Laptop/PC screen all the time... (well some do it ;-) ) once setup, it can automatically send you important "alerts" via SMS, E-Mail or using the standard desktop notifications as well.

Although these are very few of its main features to mention. If you want to install it in GNU/Linux then first make sure you've already installed Java.
