Fast Loading Image Viewer for Ubuntu Linux: Mirage

Posted on 04:26 by Unknown
These days when it comes to image viewers, GNU/Linux has a whole bunch of very competitive ones + if you use Ubuntu, then it comes with an excellent, fully featured image viewer (and a simple editor included) called Shotwell which was so good that it replaced the previous contender F-Spot.

There's certainly nothing wrong with Shotwell... but if you're searching for something loads a bit faster but doesn't come with a lot of features (don't be fooled, it's quite powerful!) then Mirage is a pretty good one.

But before we go further along this road ;-), just remember, if you have a huge list of albums to manage, then this is not the one to go for.

Main features...

*. Uses the GTK+ toolkit that integrates flawlessly with the Ubuntu Unity, Gnome classic desktop and other GTK+ based ones such as LXDE & Xfce (heck, you can even use it under Qt/KDE as well). .

*. Supports a lot of file types (including both raster and vector graphics) such as: png, jpg, svg, xpm, gif, bmp, tiff and many others.

*. Zoom/Out, Flip and Rotate, Full screen and a small thumbnail window to the left, etc.

*. It may be a simple app yet you can do basic image editing such as : Cropping, Resizing and color changing too.

*. View image properties.

*. Save in different formats.

*. Take screenshots.

*. Rename, Delete pictures.

*. Image pre-loading (which helps to reduce the loading times).

*. Slide-show support.

*. Change between image scaling algorithms.

*. Change thumbnail size and background colors... man, so much for "simplicity" :P.

You can install Mirage in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 11.10, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get install mirage

But remember, unlike with Shotwell or F-Shot, etc Mirage is not built to let you easily handle lots of image libraries (because that's not its purpose). Yet, all you want is a fast loading, pretty simple image viewer that has some useful features, then Mirage is a pretty good looking app nonetheless.

How to Install GPicView in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04?

Posted on 23:05 by Unknown
GPicView in the default image viewer for the lightweight LXDE desktop. Remember, this is certainly not a replacement for other advanced photo management apps such as Shotwell, Picasa, etc in fact as mentioned before, GPicView is just a simple image viewer rather than a "manager" at all.

It has a highly simplified GUI (a lot closer to the one that used to come with MS Windows XP) and loads fast as a result. Other than viewing images it can let you do things like...

*. View in full screen.

*. Rotate clockwise and counter clockwise.

*. Flip horizontally/vertically.

*. Save in a different formats.

*. Delete images from the window... and a separate "preferences" window that lets you configure few things such as - changing the background color of the app itself and few conformation dialogs, etc.

And on the negative side it cannot let you crop or change color settings as with Geeqie, F-Spot or gthumb for instance either. Anyhow...

You can install GPicView in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04 easily since it's in the official Ubuntu software repositories by using the below command.
sudo apt-get install gpicview

Enjoy! (man, I gotta replace this "usual ending word", any suggestions ?? ;-) ).

How to Install Geeqie (Image Viewer) in Ubuntu Linux 11.04?

Posted on 22:44 by Unknown
Geeqie is a powerful image viewer for Gnome desktop written in GTK+ tookit. Although it does come with lot of options and features but I find that GUI to be a bit confusing. For instance, to your left it shows the folders and the image thumbnails (which can be customised, sort, etc) and to the right is the actual image viewer.

But for some reason, still the interface when comparing with others such as gThumb or F-Spot for example is not that user-friendly (at least for my taste anyway) but if you're just bored with the same GUI over and over again and for a change looking for "something", well then, Geeqie is certainly not a bad choice at all.

Main features...

*. Supports almost all the image file types under the sun :).

*. Filter out certain file types.

*. Zoom-in or out (switch between different resizing methods from low quality to high).

*. Edit image meta data.

*. Colour management.

*. Delete/copy/move files.

*. Flip/Mirror/rotate.

Preference window which lets you configure a lot of things...

*. Edit images with already installed software in your GNU/Linux distributions (via its "plug-in" API).

*. Delete, change size, create new or change the default directory where thumbnails are stored.

*. Comes with a "set as wallpaper" feature, but it did not work while I was playing with it :/.

*. Change file associations.

*. Change image loading cache file size.

*. View images as slide-shows.

*. Hide the toolbar and make the "side-bar" and the image viewer separate (shown below).

*. Enable/disable image pixel info display (you know, it displays the pixel "locations" when you move your mouse hover over pictures).

*. Assign keyboard shortcuts for easy manoeuvrability.

These are just a few to mention. You can install Geeqie in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal by entering the below command in your GNU/Linux terminal.
sudo apt-get install geeqie
With all the due respect for the developers for their hard work... but I don't think I'll be using Geeqie as my primarily image editor (it just doesn't suit my taste + I think if you have a huge collection to manage, it can be a bit frustrating with it as well).

But it's very popular and a highly recommended (starred app in Ubuntu Software Center) utility nonetheless.
